At the next CORUSCANT seminar, Dr Annamaria Kiss, Teaching Fellow at Queen Mary University of London, will present a paper on how the Russian state used in its public communications foreign fighters who left Russia to join ISIS and other factions and subsequently formulated policy responses. In contrast to foreign fighters from Western European countries, Russian foreign fighters left in larger numbers but saw lower returnee rates. Based on original Russian language textual data, the paper discusses how the Russian state problematised and instrumentalised such actors in both its discourse and policy. Particularly, it highlights how this played an overlooked but nevertheless significant complementary role in the justification of Russia’s intervention in Syria. The paper is part of her book project which will be the first comprehensive study mapping the Russian understanding of foreign fighting.
She will be discussed by Dr Anne Le Huérou, lecturer at Paris Nanterre Université.
The seminar will take place on Wednesday 19 November, from 4 to 6 PM (CET), on the Condorcet Campus, Recherche Nord building, room 0.007 and online.
