Russia and Europe in Wartime
CORUSCANT conference
IRSEM Europe

27 January 2025

Nearly three years after Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, producing knowledge about Russia is more than ever a scientific—and a strategic—necessity. Decision-makers must have a clear understanding of the dynamics inside Russia’s society and politics to deal with the threat that the country poses to Europe.

While members of the European Union and NATO are not direct belligerents in the war between Russia and Ukraine, they provide military and economic support to Ukraine and have implemented a wide range of measures targeting Russia. At the same time, Russia is carrying out extensive operations of influence and destabilisation in Europe. It is quite likely that the outcome of the war will not only be decided on the battlefield, in Ukraine, but also in Russia and Europe. While Vladimir Putin’s regime has fended off many challenges, whether Russians support or oppose the war will eventually play a crucial role in shaping the dynamics of the conflict.

As Russia is now virtually off-limits to foreign researchers, and its regime ever more repressive, experts are facing formidable difficulties. This situation has been widely debated in the field of Russian studies, and after three years, many researchers have already found innovative solutions to these new challenges. The CORUSCANT research collective (Research Collective on Contemporary Russia for the Analysis of its New Trajectories) was created in 2023 to contribute to this necessary renewal of Russian studies. Beyond the scientific objectives outlined in its manifesto, it aims to create an international scientific network, train experts, and advance the dialogue with policymakers and the public.

The conference will bring together Russia experts from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands to confront their findings with the work of European decision-makers, civil society actors, and journalists.
